DNA Unit

Introduction-The purpose of this unit is to show history of the double helix, to develop an understanding between the relationship structure and function, of DNA. The goal of this unit is to grasp the concept exactly how the structure and function of DNA plays a part on our bodies. This unit will be broken down into history, function ,and structure.

Unit Objectives- Students will be able to create a model of the DNA. They construct the model based upon their knowledge of base-pairing, bonding, and Chargraff's rules.

Lesson 1-Monday-History (Due Tuesday 1159pm)

Video DNA: The Secret of Life (Video ~ 1h)

1. What characteristics of Watson and Crick made others think they would never succeed?

This video is difficult to acquire, your library may have it, or it is sold by education video libraries for 100-200$.
There are many DNA movies, make sure you find the one that is narrated by Jeff Goldblum.

2. What was “Black Monday”? How did “Black Monday” affect the direction of Wilkin’s career?

3. In the race to uncover the structure of DNA, there were three main teams. Describe the three teams and the approaches they used to solve the mystery.

4. What got Watson and Crick banned from the Race?

5. Why did Rosalind Franklin laugh at Watson and Crick’s first model?

6. Why was Pauling accused of being a double agent?

7. What are the Chargaff rules? What does Chargaff have to be bitter about?

8. Should science be an “open community” where ideas are exchanged and shared? How does NOT sharing information have an impact on scientific advancements?

9. Do you believe that Watson and Crick went about their research in an ethical way? Why or why not

Lesson 4-Friday

Lesson Objective

Students will be able to create a model of the DNA. They construct the model based upon their knowledge of base-pairing, bonding, and Chargraff's rules.

Lesson Plan

Materials: Red and black licorice sticks, Colored marshmallows or gummy bears, Toothpicks,Needle, String, and Scissors.

1. "What are the names of the bases that make up DNA?"--.

2. Power-Point--
You can make a Power-Point to explain the experiments leading to the discovery of the structure of DNA, its structures, and Chargraff's rule. .

3. DNA model making--
Models of DNA can be made from almost anything. However, I have included a link which provides instructions for easy DNA model making from candy. This activity allows kinesthetic learners and visual learners to create a model which will allow them to
